A phosphor in accordance with one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure includes a single phase yttrium borate based phosphor that is doped with Tb, its preparation process and a practical regimen which provides selective or variable color hues of green and can be adapted to emit pleasant white light. Control over the color response can be obtained by configuring dopant concentration, calcination temperature as well as by changing the excitation wavelengths irradiating this phosphor. Such color tunable smart and single phase Tb doped YBO3 phosphor can be used as a color variable component in optoelectronic devices, thereby eliminating the need for preparing different phosphors. The present invention finds particular application in commercial and domestic lighting, flat display panels, architectural accent lighting, for designing pleasant white light based systems etc. Since the color is tunable the source of the invention can be used in advanced display devices that offer illuminated texts or video output and particularly advantageous in security domains, for anticounterfeit purposes, fraud prevention, luminescence based security systems and the like.
