The invention relates to a security element comprising a thermoplastic or photosensitive replicating lacquer layer, wherein non-periodic randomized sub-micron structures are introduced into the replicating lacquer layer which produce an angle-independent optical effect such as a color effect, the structures being based on the correlation between structural properties and spectral reflectance, which is determined by means of wave-optical finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations, randomized, methods for its production and its use.
