A method for preventing the accumulation of unburned hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas after-treatment system (ATS) conduit of an internal combustion engine comprising at least one device for the reduction of polluting emissions, the method comprising the preliminary stage of disposing said exhaust gas after-treatment conduit devoid of any precatalyst and a procedure for the continuous estimation (s) of a mass (I) of unburned hydrocarbons stored in at least said device for the reduction of polluting emissions, activating (S ON ) said estimation procedure (S) a system / strategy for acceleration of the heating of the exhaust duct (ATS), beyond a normal contribution of the internal combustion engine, when said mass (I) of unburned hydrocarbons exceeds a threshold predefined (T1).
