A method to monitor and control the global microbiological activity in water in a process stream comprising: a. connecting an apparatus to a process stream, wherein said apparatus comprises a flow cell (1) containing a plurality of openings, wherein at least one opening is a flow cell inlet (13) for fluid extracted from said stream process and at least one opening is a flow cell outlet (14) for fluid exiting said flow cell, a dissolved oxygen probe (OD) (2) attached to one of said openings, a cleaning device (7 ) fixed to one of said openings, and a valve (6) associated with said flow cell; b. extracting fluid from said process stream to said flow cell (1); C. opening the valve (6) of said apparatus to allow fluid to be aspirated into said flow cell (1); d. measure at least once the OD concentration of said process stream with said DO probe (2), and where before each measurement the surface of said DO probe (2) is cleaned; and. close the valve (6) of said apparatus to prevent fluid from being sucked into said flow cell (1); F. measure at least once the OD concentration of the fluid within said apparatus with said do probe (2), and where before each measurement the surface of said DO probe (2) is cleaned; g. calculate a change in DO, Δ DO, reading between stage (d) and stage (f); h. correlate at least said value of Δ OD in step (g) with the majority of the microbiological activity (total) in said process stream; and i. controlling the amount of said microbiological activity by adding an effective amount of a treatment containing one or more oxidizing biocides to the process stream and / or an effective amount of a treatment containing one or more non-oxidizing biocides to the process stream.
