The invention relates to a device for checking steel pipes during productionand to its method of use.The device comprises a station for acquiring measurement data representativeof physicalmeasurements of the geometry of a pipe taken on the outside thereof. Itcomprises, on the other hand,a compute system capable of storing template data applicable in a coordinatesystem andrepresentative of the overall geometry of a sizing body. In a chosencoordinate system, the systemthen provides a three-dimensional representation of parts of the pipe. Foreach part of the pipe, thesystem is designed to determine a critical parameter, representative of themargin of passage of thesizing body inside a chosen part of the pipe. The method and device of theinvention may thusestablish a diagnostic of the traversability of the pipe by a sizing body.
