The present invention relates to a free pupil illumination method and illumination system, the method comprising the following steps: step 1, arranging an LED array light source, the LED array light source being a combination of several LED light sources and being provided with a light source main axis; step 2, arranging a variable field diaphragm on the light source main axis; step 3, arranging a control unit, the control unit being respectively connected to the LED array light source and the variable field diaphragm; step 4, according to a required pupil energy distribution and a required exposure field range, controlling, via the control unit, the power of the light emitted by corresponding LED light sources and a light-blocking range of the variable field diaphragm, to implement corresponding free pupil illumination. The power of the light emitted by each LED light source within the LED array light source is modulated so as to obtain a required energy distribution on a pupil plane. The present invention is simple in terms of the pupil modulation principle and structure, easy to mount and adjust, and very safe. The mode switching speed is rapid, and costs are low.
