Techniques for synthesizing and treating iron nitride materials in the presence of a magnetic field are disclosed. Some methods are directed to casting a material comprising iron in the presence of a magnetic field having an intensity of at least 0.01T to form a workpiece comprising at least one iron-based phase domain comprising uniaxial magnetic anisotropy will be.
