An open system with a ground station configured for airborne power generation. The open system may include a kite having one or more airfoils for mounting a plurality of turbine driven generators thereon. The turbine driven generator may also function as a motor driven propeller in a power flight mode used during takeoff, which may include vertical takeoff and landing modes. A perch configured to facilitate takeoff and landing can be used as part of the system. The perch can rotate so that the pivot is directed in the direction of tension of the tether.
