Methods and systems for providing magnetic sub-structures that can be used in magnetic devices as well as magnetic elements and memories using sub-structures are provided. The magnetic sub-structure includes a plurality of ferromagnetic layers and a plurality of non-magnetic layers. The plurality of ferromagnetic layers are sandwiched by a plurality of non-magnetic layers. The plurality of ferromagnetic layers are not mixed with a plurality of non-magnetic layers, and are chemically stable compared to a plurality of non-magnetic layers. The plurality of ferromagnetic layers interact with a plurality of non-magnetic layers to substantially create a magnetically damaged layer. Furthermore, the plurality of nonmagnetic layers induce perpendicular anisotropy in the plurality of ferromagnetic layers. As the write current passes through the magnetic sub-structure, the magnetic sub-structure is configured to switch between a plurality of stable magnetic states.
