The SPR detection device includes an optical system including a sensor member including a planar metal layer, and the sensor member is removably mountable to the housing. The first optical element directs the incident beam toward the backside of the metal layer at a predetermined angular range with respect to the normal to the sensor layer. A second optical element guides at least one reflected beam corresponding to the incident beam from the metal layer to the transducer. A transducer converts incoming electromagnetic radiation into an electrical signal for transmission to a signal processor disposed within the housing and operatively connected to the at least one photoelectric converter for detecting a surface plasmon resonance angle . The first optical element is configured such that the at least one incident beam spreads over at least 20 .
