PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) carbon nanofiber capable of being manufactured at a low cost by using an electrospinning method.SOLUTION: The method according to this invention includes a process to produce a continuous carbon nanofiber from polyvinyl alcohol that is inexpensive polymer. In this method, a PVA nanofiber is produced by an electrospinning method and the PVA nanofiber in tensioned condition is stabilized by dehydration reaction using iodine vapor. The stabilized structure is carbonized at 1000°C for a sufficient period of time to form a carbon nanofiber. The carbon nanofiber retains the same form as the first nanofiber mat.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
