A process for increasing the digestibility of a plant's cell wall, a composition for inhibiting the enzymes constituting the phenylpropanoid pathway and using chemical modulators or inhibitors. The present invention relates to a process for the inventive application of chemical inhibitors of the phenylpropanoid pathway, including mdca and pip, to grassy or cominoid-like plants, among others. The plants are treated with inhibitors at the time of cultivation, providing a less indigestible biomass and making the saccharification process easier, as well as facilitating the pretreatment step in the production of cellulosic ethanol. The present invention also relates to a composition for inhibiting enzymes that form the phenylpropanoid pathway.
