The aim of the present invention is to provide an identification system for determining specific biomarkers of lung injury in subjects exposed to both indoor and outdoor toxic environmental pollutants including cigarette smoke. The 21 specific miRNAs identified will allow the early detection of lung damage in people exposed to environmental pollutants. Moreover, this molecular signature will also allow the follow-up of these subjects. These microRNAs may also be used to assess lung injury in subjects exposed directly or indirectly (same room) to electronic cigarette smoke.
