Described are various embodiments of a digital display device for use by auser havingreduced visual acuity. The device comprises, in one embodiment, a digitaldisplaymedium comprising an array of pixels and operable to render a pixelated imageaccordingly; a diffractive light field barrier overlaying the digital displaymedium at adistance therefrom and defined by an array of diffractive optical elements,wherein eachdiffractive optical element is defined by a concentrically patterned barriercut outcentered over a corresponding set of pixels to diffractively influence a lightfieldemanating therefrom and thereby govern which of the pixels can be viewed byeach eyeof the user; and a hardware processor operable on image pixel data for animage to bedisplayed to output corrected image pixel data to be rendered as a function ofa storedcharacteristic of the diffractive light field barrier and a selected visioncorrectionparameter related to the user's reduced visual acuity such that the processedimage isrendered via the light field barrier to produce a virtual image on a virtualplane at adesignated distance from the digital display designated to at least partiallycompensate forthe user's reduced visual acuity.
