An extended range electric vehicle (10) comprising: a set of drive wheels (35); an engine (12) having an output shaft (14); a planetary gear set (22) having first, second and third nodes (B, A, C), said first node (B) being connected to and driven by the engine output shaft (14) only when the engine ( 12) is turned on; a passively rectified winding field device (24) connected to the second node (A) and configured to operate only as a generator and only when the engine (12) is on; a selectable one-way clutch (SOWC) (28) having an input side (31) connected to the third node (C); a polyphase motor / generator unit (MGU) (26) connected to an output side (33) of the SOWC (28); a power transmission shaft (34) connecting the MGU (26) to the drive wheels (35); an additional starter motor (18) adapted to crank the engine (12); and a controller (11) having an algorithm configured to control the engine (12), the winding field device (24), the MGU (26), the SOWC (28), and the starter motor (18) as necessary to provide each of the all-electric forward mode (EV), the EV reverse mode, at least one power split mode, and at least one in-line mode, the at least one series mode providing a direct mechanical path between the engine (12) and the drive wheels (35), and wherein the SOWC (28) overrides in at least one of the forward and reverse EV modes.
