Absolute value single-turn rotary encoder (10) with selectable multi-turn function comprising: an electronic angle sensor (14) and an electronic evaluation unit (16); anda closed housing (12) into which the angle sensor (14) and the evaluation unit (16) are integrated and which has an external physical interface (18) for coupling an external attachment (26), the interface (18) for positive engagement wherein the evaluation unit (16) is arranged to be operated both in a single-turn configuration and in a multi-turn configuration, wherein the evaluation unit (16) is further configured to: recognize whether the add-on (26) is coupled to the interface (18) automatically to switch from singleturn configuration to multiturn configuration without further configuration as soon as it is detected that the add-on (26) is docked; and to remain in the singleturn configuration when the attachment (26) is not coupled to the interface (18).
