A computer-implemented method of controlling a host vehicle relative to a first vehicle immediately in front of the host vehicle includes detecting a second vehicle traveling behind the host vehicle and on the same lane as the host vehicle. The method includes detecting a brake application initiated by the vehicle system of the host vehicle. The brake actuation, based on an acceleration control rate, causes the host vehicle to decelerate to maintain a heading ahead reference distance to the first vehicle. The method includes determining a relative rearward heading distance between the host vehicle and the second vehicle with respect to a rearward heading reference distance, and modifying an acceleration control rate based on the relative rearward heading distance and the rearward heading reference distance. Further, the method includes controlling the vehicle system according to the modified acceleration control rate.
