An ion source comprises a nebuliser 1 which emits a liquid spray, a first target 5 downstream of the nebuliser 1, wherein droplets of the liquid spray are arranged to impact upon the first target 5, and a sample target 10 arranged downstream of the first target 5, wherein a sample to be analysed is provided at the sample target 10. The mist may be ionised by collision with the first target 5. The sample target 10 may be formed of an analyte material or have the sample material deposited on it. Another device may be provided which heats the sample target 10, adjusting the temperature in a time-varying way. A mass spectrometer may comprise such an ion source. Information may be extracted to provide a chromatogram, showing the time different analyte ions escape, elute or are released from the sample.
