The method for operating a piston engine (1) in a gas mode comprises the steps of introducing gaseous main fuel into a combustion chamber (19) of a cylinder (2) of the engine (1) and injecting liquid pilot fuel into the combustion chamber (19) and/or into a precham- ber of the cylinder (2). The pilot fuel is injected during each engine cycle at least during a first injection event and a second injection event, which are separated from each other in respect of time, and the amount of the pilot fuel injected during the first injection event is adjusted on the basis of cylinder pressure measure- ment.
