SYSTEM AND METHODS FOR COMMUNICATIONS IN MIXED REALITY APPLICATIONS

Systems and methods are provided for the use of proxy objects in augmented reality and virtual reality environments. In an exemplary embodiment, a proxy object emits a temporally-modulated light signal, and the signal is detected at a user's head-mounted display. The light signal is decoded to identify which virtual object is intended to be represented by that proxy object. The location of the proxy object is tracked, and the identified virtual object is rendered on the head-mounted display at a position corresponding to the position of the proxy object. Depending on the light signal emitted by the proxy object, the same object may appear to a user at different times to be a paint brush, a weapon, a torch, or other virtual object.
