The present invention relates to a method for early identification of fat deposition in cattle comprising the steps of: (i) DNA extraction from animals with potential increased subcutaneous fat deposition; (ii) animal genotyping for the ddef 1 gene; (iii) identification, in the genomic sequence characterized in (ii), of the genotype or genotypes associated with the highest and lowest fat deposition; and (iv) establishment of genotype x phenotype association taking into account allelic frequencies in the studied population. The invention also relates to a kit for early identification of fat deposition in cattle comprising the components: (i) appropriate primers for amplification of one part of the ddef 1 gene sequence which is variable in cattle and has a frequency difference between the extremes of fat deposition; (ii) reagents used in genotyping reaction; and (iii) and manual with instructions for identification and interpretation of results.
