The application proposes methods for treating or alleviating hypercholemia or cholestatic liver disease by administering to an individual in need a therapeutically effective amount of an inhibitor of an apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBTI) or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt. In addition, methods for treating or alleviating liver disease, lowering serum bile acid levels or bile acids in the liver, treating or alleviating pruritis, lowering enzyme levels in the liver, or lowering bilirubin levels are described, including administration to an individual in need of a therapeutically effective amount ASBTI or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt.
