Compounds and compositions are disclosed in which a drug is coupled to a recognition ligand fragment via a self-stabilizing linker group from which a drug compound or active drug fragment is released to the target site of action. Methods for treating diseases, such as cancer or an autoimmune disease characterized by abnormal target cells, using the compounds and compositions of this invention are also disclosed.
