Techniques are provided for deriving a WLAN security context from an existing WWAN security context. According to certain aspects, the user equipment (UE) establishes a secure connection with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). The UE may receive an indication of the wireless local area network (WLAN) from which it will derive the security context from the WWAN. The UE then derives the security context for the WLAN based on the security context for the WWAN obtained while establishing a secure connection with the WWAN and establishes a secure connection with the WLAN using the derived security context for the WLAN . This allows the UE to establish a strong security network association (RSNA) with the WLAN while avoiding AAA servers and long authentication procedures, thus speeding up the association process.
