An object sensing apparatus and method capable of sensing an area where an object is touched on a display is disclosed. The object sensing apparatus can control the operation of the light source or the camera included in the object sensing apparatus based on the pattern image on which the pattern on the display is photographed. The object sensing apparatus can analyze the pattern displayed on the pattern image to determine whether the brightness of the current light source or the exposure time of the camera is appropriate. The object sensing apparatus can determine the optimum object sensing condition by increasing the brightness of the light source or by increasing the exposure time of the camera when the pattern indicated by the pattern image does not satisfy the predetermined condition.
