The disclosure provides a nested variable voltage transformer. A vehicle powertrain includes a DC to DC power converter and a controller. The DC / DC power converter includes first, second and third branches that are parallel, wherein the first branch is configured to carry a first DC current that is substantially equal to a sum of the DC currents of the second and third branches. The controller may be configured to modulate switches of the first branch having a frequency greater than at least twice that of the second and third branches.
