A pin fin heat sink includes a plurality of pin fins (12) extending from a base plate (14), at least one of the plurality of pin fins (12) defining a hollow portion (16) therein. The pin fin heat sink also includes an annular ring of metal foam material (24) disposed within the hollow portion (16), the annular ring of metal foam material (24) having a radially outer surface in direct contact with an inner diameter of the pin fin (12), the annular ring of metal foam material (24) defining a central cavity. The pin fin heat sink further includes a phase change material (18) disposed within the central cavity.
