The invention relates to a handheld ballistic shield of a rectangular shape comprising ballistic material, the shield comprising an impact face; a rear face; a first long edge and a second long edge defining the length of the shield; two short edges defining the width of the shield; a handle on the rear face for carrying or holding the shield; connecting means for attaching the handheld ballistic shield to another handheld ballistic shield. Preferably, the connection means comprise a hinge pin and a hinge sleeve.
