The invention relates to the compression coding of sound signals forming a succession in time of frames of samples, in each of N channels in ambisonic representation of order greater than 0, the method comprising: - forming, from the channels for a current frame, a covariance matrix between channels and find (S3) eigenvectors of the covariance matrix to obtain an eigenvector matrix, - test (S5) the eigenvector matrix to verify that it represents a rotation in a space of dimension N and correct (S6) if not the matrix of eigenvectors until a rotation matrix is obtained, for the current frame, and - apply said rotation matrix (S7) to the signals of the N channels before encoding by channels separated from said signals.
