A patient care system is disclosed comprising a medical pump for delivering a medicine to a patient, a processor in communication with the medical pump, the processor comprising a memory and a logic, wherein the memory stores a critical medicine information identifying whether the medicine is designated as a critical medicine, a trigger condition information identifying a trigger condition which would normally result in pausing/stopping delivery of medicine from the pump, wherein the logic is adapted to activate a fail-operate mode for the critical medicine, and control the pump to operate in the fail-operate mode for the critical medicine and keep infusing to deliver the critical medicine, when the fail-operate mode is activated, despite a triggering of the triggering condition.
