Generation and use of discovery ion current in mass spectrometry

This is a system for generating a discovery ion current. One of the systems includes a mass spectrometer that provides ion current measurements. The system includes a controller coupled to the mass spectrometer. The system also includes a controller and a liquid handler coupled to the mass spectrometer. The controller is configured to determine a basic average ion current for each mass-to-charge interval, wherein the mass-to-charge interval includes at least one mass-to-charge channel. The controller is configured to calculate a relative change between a current ion current measurement of the charge interval and a base average of the charge interval. The controller is configured to compare the relative change to a threshold. The controller is also configured to initiate fraction collection by the liquid handler in response to the determination that the relative change has exceeded the threshold.
