A combined system of Passive Entry / Passive Start (PEPS) for vehicles and wireless charging for portable electronic devices. The system includes a vehicle transmitter configured to transmit a signal according to a wireless charging protocol. The signal is transmitted over a first wireless communication channel for reception by a portable electronic device. The vehicle receiver is configured to receive response data from the portable electronic device via the second wireless communication channel. Response data is generated by the portable electronic device in response to receiving the signal transmitted by the vehicle transmitter. The vehicle processor module is configured to perform at least one of unlocking a vehicle door and starting the vehicle in response to receiving the response data by the vehicle receiver.
