The present invention further relates to a sensor element (110) for determining at least one analyte, comprising a pair of electrodes (112, 114) and at least an active and an inactive chemistry matrix (116, 118), said active chemistry matrix (116) changing at least one electrochemical property dependent on an enzymatic activity active in the presence of said analyte, (i) wherein said pair of electrodes (112, 114) consists of two electrodes electrically insulated from other electrodes, (ii) wherein said active chemistry matrix (116) comprises said enzymatic activity and wherein said inactive chemistry matrix (118) does not comprise said enzymatic activity, and (iii) wherein a first electrode (112) of said pair of electrodes contacts said active chemistry matrix (116) and wherein a second electrode (114) of said pair of electrodes contacts said inactive chemistry matrix (118).
