The present invention relates to a method of detecting at least one analyte in a test sample, said method comprising the steps of a) contacting said test sample (i) to an active chemistry matrix (116) changing at least one electrochemical property dependent on an enzymatic activity active in the presence of said analyte, said active chemistry matrix contacting a first electrode (112); and (ii) to an inactive chemistry matrix (118), said inactive chemistry matrix contacting a second electrode (114), b) closing an electrical circuit including said first electrode(112), said second electrode (114), and said active chemistry matrix (116) and inactive chemistry matrix (118), followed by determining a first value of said at least one electrochemical property, c) inverting electrical polarity of the electrical circuit of b), followed by determining a second value of said at least one electrochemical property, and d) detecting said at least one analyte based on said first value and on said second value. Moreover, the present invention relates to a test device and to a test system adapted to make use of the method of the present invention. The present invention further relates to a sensor element (110) for determining at least one analyte, comprising a pair of electrodes (112, 114) and at least an active and an inactive chemistry matrix (116, 118), said active chemistry matrix (116) changing at least one electrochemical property dependent on an enzymatic activity active in the presence of said analyte, (i) wherein said pair of electrodes (112, 114) consists of two electrodes electrically insulated from other electrodes, (ii) wherein said active chemistry matrix (116) comprises said enzymatic activity and wherein said inactive chemistry matrix (118) does not comprise said enzymatic activity, and (iii) wherein a first electrode (112) of said pair of electrodes contacts said active chemistry matrix (116) and wherein a second electrode (114) of said pair of electrodes contacts said inactive chemistry matrix (118).
