The method includes receiving measured values concerning the lubricant, determining a current chemical composition of the lubricant on the basis of the measured values, comparing the current chemical composition with chemical compositions known in advance, which are stored in a database, wherein function failure tendency values for the use of lubricants having the chemical compositions known in advance in connection with machine elements composed of materials known in advance are stored in the database, identifying a function failure tendency value on the basis of the comparison step, and outputting the function failure tendency value.
