methods and systems for providing efficient multi-mode operation in wlan system. method and system apply mac transmission opportunity (txop) protection for multi-mode operation in wlan system. particularly, mac mechanisms are defined to hold multiple-mode cts frames and multiple-mode cf end frames sent by ap, each in appropriate format for the corresponding mode which also applies to a single mode as a trivial case. mac mechanisms allow truncation of txop duration to release unused portion of txop when no additional data for transmission is available. unused protected txop release is possible for ap transmissions and protected sta transmissions.
