A surgical apparel system (10). The system includes a surgical garment (12) and a surgical helmet (20). The helmet comprises a chin bar (24) having a recess in the distal surface and a coupling member (48) disposed within the recess wherein the coupling member is positioned proximal to said distal surface of the chin bar. The surgical garment includes a transparent face shield (18) and an attachment element (58) coupled to the transparent face shield. The attachment element includes a head having a proximal surface that is configured to removably engage the coupling member of the helmet. A portion of the head is positioned proximal to said distal surface of said chin bar when said first attachment element engages said first coupling member.
