A simulator (2) for generating a relation, which simulates the pressure medium volume capacity of a hydraulic system, between the activation force and activation travel of a brake pedal (8) of a hydraulic brake system in a by-wire operating mode, and having a pressure medium master function for operating the hydraulic brake system in a reserve operating mode with a hydraulic pressure chamber (20) which is formed in the simulator and functions as a simulator chamber in the by-wire operating mode and as a master chamber in the reserve operating mode, wherein the hydraulic pressure chamber (20) is in each case partially bounded by a pedal piston (14) which can be actuated using the brake pedal (8) and is embodied as an annular piston, and a simulator piston (16) which is guided in the pedal piston (14) and is sealed with respect thereto.
