The invention relates to motor vehicle steering mechanisms, and more particularly to rack-and-pinion steering mechanisms operating on the principle of "drive pinion – driven toothed rack" and intended for changing the position of the steered wheels relative to a vehicle. A motor vehicle rack and pinion steering mechanism with a variable gear ratio includes two different drive pinions rigidly fastened to a steering shaft, and two driven rack segments rigidly fastened to each other and kinematically connected to steered wheels, wherein the second pinion is configured to be symmetrically non-circular (for example, elliptic) or circular and eccentric, and the simultaneous pairwise interaction of all of the pinions and rack segments takes place in ranges with coinciding gear ratios.
