The examples provide a fluid recovery system and method for use with a concentrator system for concentrating particles suspended in a fluid, the suspension being recovered from a fluid stream drawn from the concentrator system. The controller is configured to control the actuation of the valve to direct the concentrate being drawn from the concentrator chamber to the recovery reservoir through the recovery tube, based on the fluid volume movement. The system, based on the goal of maximizing particle recovery with minimal dilution, uses a density sensor to detect the density transition of the fluid in the fluid return tube to concentrate it in the fluid suspension passing through the return tube and the operating return valve. The leading and trailing edges of some of the particles can be identified.
