The system for determining abnormal states based on power plant alarms or symptoms and changes of major operating variables comprises: an information transmitting and receiving unit receiving information on alarms of a power plant; a first calculation unit calculating a state score of at least one abnormal state based on the information; a first selection unit performing filtering based on the state score and selecting the at least one abnormal state; a second calculation unit calculating and normalizing a possibility for each of large-step event types in the abnormal state selected by the first selection unit so as to calculate a probability for each of the large-step event types in the abnormal state; and a second selection unit determining the large-step event type in the abnormal state of the power plant based on the probability.
