The present invention relates to a method for diagnosing the deterioration of a lightning arrester for a substation and a system thereof. According to the present invention, the method comprises the following steps of: allowing a data detection module to receive arrester application voltage data from a potential transformer (PT) and receive total leak current data from an arrester leak current detector; allowing a data analysis module to calculate a capacitive leak current waveform and a resistive leak current waveform from the received arrester application voltage data and the received total leak current data; allowing a data management module to calculate the maximum information and root mean square (RMS) of the resistive leak current from the calculated resistive leak current waveform; and allowing an arrester deterioration diagnosis module to compare the RMS of the resistive leak current with a previously stored arrester deterioration level table to determine whether an arrester is deteriorated. Accordingly, the resistive leak current flowing in an operating arrester can be precisely measured, thereby safely diagnosing the deterioration of the arrester without electric shock risk to an operator, precisely diagnosing the deterioration of the arrester regardless of the type, the specification, the surrounding temperature, and the like of the arrestor, calculating the resistive leak current with a slight error even in the case that the content of harmonics included in the leak current is high, correctly determining the deterioration of each arrestor through precise performance analysis of each arrestor to inform a proper replacement period of each arrester, and preventing an accident due to the deterioration of the arrester.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2020
