The present invention describes a simple purification process of neutral breast milk oligosaccharide (HMO) produced by microbial fermentation. The process utilizes a combination of cation exchanger treatment, anion exchanger treatment and nanofiltration and/or electrodialysis steps, which allows efficient purification of large amounts of neutral breast milk oligosaccharides with high purity. In contrast to the current purification process used for the fermentation product of neutral breast milk oligosaccharides, this process enables the provision of breast milk oligosaccharides without the need for chromatographic separation. The purified breast milk oligosaccharide can be obtained in a solid form as a crystalline material or a sterile filtered concentrate by spray drying. The breast milk oligosaccharides provided do not contain proteins and recombinants generated from the recombinant microbial strains used, and are therefore well suited for food, medical food and feed (eg pet food) applications.
