The invention relates to a cooking appliance (10) with a cooking space (14), a ventilation channel (30, 36) through which the cooking space (14) can be vented, a sensor (44) which is assigned to the ventilation channel (30, 36) , and an evaluation circuit (42) which has an input (50) for a signal from the sensor (44), at least one further input (52) for a signal which indicates an operating state of the cooking appliance (10) and an output an error signal (FS) can be output, which indicates a leak in the cooking chamber (14). The invention also relates to a method for detecting an error state of such a cooking appliance (10), in which the evaluation circuit (42) compares the signal from the sensor (44) with an expected value based on the operating state of the cooking appliance detected via the further input (52) (10) should be present and output an error signal (FS) in the event of a deviation that is above a predetermined tolerance range.
