This disclosure provides a method and system for improving stop / start control of the vehicle propulsion source via machine learning. Methods and systems are provided to improve the ability to automatically stop the vehicle drive source and prevent the vehicle drive source from automatically stopping. The methods and systems include processing vehicle operator inputs in a machine learning model and characterizing the vehicle operator in one of several vehicle operator groups. The automatic stop and start of the vehicle drive source can be set in response to a group to which a vehicle operator belongs.
