The disclosure provides an automated coupling system with takeover and transfer of steering. A vehicle docking assistance system includes a steering system that includes steered vehicle wheels mounted on an exterior of the vehicle and a steering motor mechanically coupled to the steered vehicle wheels. The system further includes a controller that takes control of the steered vehicle wheels through a connection to the steering motor and, after gaining control of the steered vehicle wheels, receives a command to perform an automated coupling maneuver and controls the steered vehicle wheels using the steering motor.
