This report presents the results of one of a series of experiments that211u001einvestigated driver performance in a generic Automated Highway System (AHS) 211u001econfiguration. The experimental research was conducted in an advanced driving 211u001esimulator and investigated the effects of using an automated speed, steering, and 211u001egap control system (SSGCS) and a collision warning system (CWS) on driving 211u001ebehavior. When either the SSGCS or the CWS was on alone, it had no effect on 211u001eaverage velocity or minimum following distance when driving performance was 211u001ecompared with a control group that did not have either system available. Nor did 211u001ehaving had the SSGCS on have an effect on those variables when it was later 211u001edisengaged. Other variables did show an effect of using the automated systems. 211u001eThis report will be of interest to engineers and researchers involved in 211u001eIntelligent Transportation Systems and other advanced highway systems.
