Apparatus for determining the position of a snooker ball on a snooker table comprises a ball marker 3, a reference piece 7, and two distance determining means 23 & 31. To determine the position of a snooker ball, before the ball is moved, the ball marker 3 is placed up against the snooker ball which is then removed. The reference piece 7 is placed in the position previously occupied by the snooker ball, and the two distance determining means 23 & 31 are used to determine the distance between the reference piece 7 and two predetermined reference points 25 & 33. These determined distances mat be used to position the ball in its original location after it has been moved.
