The network device can function to dynamically change the total back-off duration. The network device can determine the total transmission duration for transmitting data from the communication medium. If the total transmission duration exceeds a predetermined transmission interval associated with data, the network device may determine the total back-off duration based at least in part on the total transmission duration and the predetermined transmission interval. The network device may initiate the total back-off duration by deferring data transmission over the communication medium for the total back-off duration. In some embodiments, if the network device implements multiple consecutive back-off intervals, the network device determines whether transmission by another network device is detected on the communication medium after the first back-off interval has elapsed. It may depend on whether to change the duration of the second back-off interval.
