The present invention relates to a product used for the therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of infection, the treatment comprising oral administration of the product, wherein the product is selected from nutritional supplements, food, dietary supplements, beverages and pharmaceutical products, wherein The product contains carrot RG-I polysaccharides with the following combinatorial characteristics: molecular weight in the range of 10-300 kDa; A backbone consisting of galacturonic acid residues and rhamnose residues, the rhamnose residues contained in alpha(1→4)-galacturonic-alpha(1→2)-rhamnose residues; The following monosaccharide composition: 20-60 mol% galacturonic acid residues, wherein individual galacturonic acids can be methylated and/or acetylated; 8-50 mol% rhamnose residues; 0-40 mol% arabinose residue; 0-40 mol% galactose residue; A molar ratio of galacturonic acid residues to rhamnose residues ranging from 5:1 to 1:1; Galacturonic acid residues, rhamnose residues, arabinose residues, and galactose residues together constitute at least 85 mol% of the monosaccharide residues in the carrot RG-1 polysaccharide. These carrot RG-I polysaccharides can be prepared by partial hydrolysis of pectin polysaccharides present in carrot pectin isolates. The effect of carrot RG-I polysaccharides on infection is substantially improved by enzymatic hydrolysis of RG-I polysaccharides to remove at least a portion of the homogalacturonan component.
