Uplink resources which repeat with a predefined periodicity are allocated by a cellular network for a UE to utilise. If the UE does not require an occurrence of the resource, it may transmit an indication such as a preamble in the allocated resource. The network decodes the preamble as an indication that the UE does not have any data to transmit but does not wish to terminate the repeating resource allocation. The network may reallocate the unused resource. Alternatively, the preamble may indicate that the resources may be terminated. In a further alternative, the preamble may indicate that data will be transmitted in the allocated resource. The preamble may be selected to have a high detection rate and may comprise a Zadoff-Chu sequence, DMRS, low data rate subframe or combination. Transmission of a preamble reduces UE power consumption compared to dummy data.
